A convincing name, website or introduction does not authenticate an investment or a payment instruction. Strong safeguards use independently verified contacts, clear permissions and a pause before sensitive changes.
Verify through a separate channel
Use contact information obtained independently when confirming wiring instructions, account changes or an unexpected request. Treat urgency and secrecy as reasons to slow down. A familiar voice or message thread can be imitated.
Check the professional and the product
Look up the individual and firm through official databases. Compare names, registration details and disclosed history. Registration does not guarantee an investment, and a private offering still requires scrutiny of the actual issuer and terms.
Make the household response practical
Review account access, multifactor authentication, trusted contacts and procedures for suspected fraud. Include family members and caregivers where appropriate. If something appears wrong, contact the financial institution promptly through a verified channel.
Four questions for a better conversation
- How are money-movement instructions independently verified?
- Who can access accounts and who can change contact information?
- What happens if a family member suspects exploitation or incapacity?
- How do I check a professional and report a concern?
Bring these to the conversation
