Behavior / EXPLAINER

Your information diet is an investment input.

What you read shapes the questions you think to ask. Build a routine that leaves room for disagreement.

THE RESEARCH QUESTION

Give each source a job, then use another source to check its work.

Choose a job before a publication

There is no single source that does everything equally well. A breaking-news report helps establish what happened. A long interview gives someone room to explain a view. A filing supports document-level research. A community surfaces questions. Treating those formats as substitutes can give opinion the appearance of verification.

Write down what would change your mind

Before opening another article, describe the question you are trying to answer. Then identify the evidence that would support or weaken each possible answer. This simple exercise can make reading more deliberate. It is easier to notice a missing data point when you have named it in advance.

Read the incentives as well as the words

Ask whether the author sells subscriptions, manages capital, promotes a product, holds a position, or is interviewing a potential customer. An incentive does not automatically invalidate an argument. It is context for evaluating the evidence and deciding where an independent check would help. Unlabeled certainty deserves more questions than a clear statement of uncertainty.

Build a small, repeatable routine

Try one factual overview, one thoughtful analysis, and one primary-source check. Once a week, add a longer piece that challenges a familiar belief. Perimeter Desk’s collections are designed around this editorial approach. They are suggested reading combinations, not ratings of reliability or a promise that a particular source will make someone a better investor.
